Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 socket: Socket P

The Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 uses the Socket P socket. It is a 10 W dual-core Merom ultra-low-voltage part at 1.2 GHz with 2 MB of shared L2 cache for thin notebooks, also shipped in a Socket M package.

What the Core 2 Duo U7600 is

The Intel Core 2 Duo U7600 is a 1.2 GHz ultra-low-voltage mobile dual core from April 2007. It runs two Merom cores at 1.2 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 2 MB of shared L2 on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 10 W.

The U7600 shipped in two packages with the same model number, a Socket M version and a Socket P version, both on a 533 MT/s bus with a 9x multiplier at about 289 dollars launch price. This page covers the Socket P package. It exists because thin notebooks needed full Core 2 features at a third of the 35 W power.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The U7600 fits Socket P notebooks with DDR2 memory and a BIOS that lists ultra-low-voltage Merom parts. The Socket M package uses Socket M boards, and the two packages do not interchange despite the shared model number. Display comes from the notebook board graphics. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2 through the board chipset in two channels.

A 533 MT/s front side bus ties the CPU to the mobile chipset. PCIe slots and board graphics hang off the chipset.

Cooling is the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly for the exact thin chassis, with Enhanced SpeedStep trimming clocks and voltage on battery.

Upgrade paths

On Socket P the upgrade is the Intel Core 2 Duo U7700 at 1.333 GHz within the same 10 W class, or a standard-voltage Merom such as the Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 where the chassis cools 35 W. A swap must stay within the thermal design the chassis was qualified for, and must match the Socket P package, not the Socket M one.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Core 2 Duo U7600 use?

Socket P, on boards with ultra-low-voltage Merom support. A Socket M package with the same model number uses Socket M boards.

How many cores does the Core 2 Duo U7600 have?

Two cores and 2 threads at 1.2 GHz with 2 MB of shared L2 cache.

What memory works with the Core 2 Duo U7600?

DDR2 through the board chipset in two channels.
