What the Atom CE4100 is
The Intel Atom CE4100 is a single core Sodaville media processor that Intel unveiled on September 24, 2009 at up to 1.2 GHz. It runs one Bonnell class core at 1.2 GHz with no Hyper-Threading, so 1 core gives 1 thread, backed by 512 KB of L2 cache. Power is rated at 7 W on a 45 nm process in a 27 mm FCBGA package.
Sodaville is the first 45 nm consumer electronics SoC on Intel architecture with GMA500 class 2D and 3D graphics, dual 1080p decode, a NAND controller and SATA with USB 2.0 on die. It powered TV widgets, IPTV boxes and media players such as the Boxee Box. Against Tunnel Creek embedded parts it trades PCIe lanes for video blocks.
Memory runs on two 32-bit channels with DDR2 up to 800 MT/s or DDR3 up to 1333 MT/s.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The Atom CE4100 is soldered to the board in BGA 951 and cannot be replaced. Media repair means board replacement.
Firmware comes from the device vendor with the media software stack. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide covers soldered rules.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory is DDR2 up to 800 MT/s or DDR3 up to 1333 MT/s on two 32-bit channels, fixed per design.
No CPU PCIe lanes are claimed. Board I/O such as SATA-300 and USB 2.0 comes from the SoC.
Cooling is passive by design. The 7 W envelope suits sealed media boxes.
Upgrade paths
There is no CPU upgrade path on BGA 951 because the chip is soldered. Faster CE4130 and CE4150 media SoCs fit the same package class where the vendor offers those boards.
Frequently asked questions
