What the A6-7480 is

The A6-7480 packs two Excavator cores into a 45 W budget desktop envelope. It launched on 26 October 2018 with a 3.5 GHz base and up to 3.8 GHz boost. AMD positions it for office towers that need integrated graphics without discrete cards.

One megabyte of shared L2 supports office multitasking without L3. The high base clock keeps interaction snappy for documents and browsers. Two threads cover foreground work plus background sync.

Radeon R5 graphics handle office displays and video playback. The process is 28 nm on a 250 mm2 die with 3.1 billion transistors. The multiplier is locked. DDR3 memory in two channels feeds both CPU and graphics.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The A6-7480 fits Socket FM2+ on FM2+ boards only. Makers list Carrizo FM2+ parts with A68H and A88X boards that provide DDR3 slots and display outputs. AM4 boards cannot take this PGA chip.

Mid 2018 BIOS versions include Carrizo FM2+ IDs on most FM2+ boards. Early production may need an update. FM2 boards with older chipsets may post with reduced features where listed, but FM2+ boards are the expected home. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide explains board matching.

Single socket towers are the norm. There is no second socket, so growth means another FM2+ APU on the same board.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR3-2133 in two channels suits budget office builds. Matched pairs lift R5 graphics performance in particular. Start with 8 GB for office multitasking.

PCIe 3.0 for graphics with PCIe 2.0 for general links covers a discrete GPU where gaming grows. Most office builds rely on integrated R5 and leave the main slot free. Onboard SATA and USB come from the FCH chipset.

Cooling uses the 48 by 96 mm FM2+ pattern from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide. A 45 W stock cooler runs quietly in ventilated towers. Keep intake filters clean in dusty offices.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, the AMD A8-7680 doubles cores to four with R7 graphics at the same 45 W for heavier office multitasking. The Athlon X4 845 drops graphics for headless nodes where listed. Both fit FM2+ after a BIOS check.

AM4 Bristol Ridge APUs such as PRO A6-8570 move to DDR4 for newer office fleets. They need new boards and memory.

Past FM2+ newer AMD desktops need AM4 or AM5. The A6-7480 covers basic office towers where two cores with graphics must run cheaply.
