What the A10-7890K is
The A10-7890K is a four core, four thread unlocked desktop flagship APU from Godavari. It launched in January 2016 with a 4.0 GHz base and up to 4.3 GHz boost at 95 W. Four cores at the highest FM2+ clocks cover budget gaming towers where integrated graphics carry eSports titles.
Four megabytes of L2 cache feed four cores. The 4.0 GHz base was the fastest APU base of its year, while 4.3 GHz boost leads single thread peaks. Ninety five watts need capable tower cooling for sustained tuning.
Radeon R7 Series with 8 compute units up to 866 MHz gives 1.02 TFLOPS of compute. Eight CUs suit League of Legends, DOTA2 and Counter Strike at 1080p high settings per AMD labs. Wraith Cooler ships in the box for near silent operation.
On 28 nm the 7890K was the fastest FM2+ APU ever released. The socket file spells the codename Godavari, while TechPowerUp writes Godaveri for the same silicon. Suggested price of $164.99 placed it against Core i3 parts.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The 7890K fits Socket FM2+ on A88X boards with DDR3 slots. Makers list Godavari flagships with Wraith Cooler clearance notes. FM2+ boards launched with Kaveri accept Godavari after a BIOS update.
Dual channel DDR3-2133 feeds R7 graphics bandwidth near 34.1 GB per sec. Two modules are mandatory for gaming pace. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers FM2+ chipsets A88X, A85X, A78 and A68H.
The A10-7860K on the same socket trims clocks and power to 65 W. The Athlon X4 845 trims graphics where a discrete card is planned.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
DDR3-2133 dual channel is the memory target for R7 graphics. Matched 2x4GB kits were the AMD lab configuration for eSports tests. Faster kits may exceed spec on A88X boards.
Sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes feed a discrete R7 card for Dual Graphics or standalone play. Integrated R7 covers office displays alone. SATA SSDs transform load times.
Ninety five watts with bundled Wraith Cooler run near silent at stock per AMD. Tuning to 4.3 GHz and beyond needs tower airflow. The 125 W near silent solution also fits.
Upgrade paths
On FM2+ there is no higher APU above the 7890K, so growth means a discrete GPU or more memory. Dual Graphics with an R7 250 card adds headroom where boards allow it.
Past FM2+ the move is AM4 with DDR4 and newer graphics. Wraith Cooler often carries across with new brackets where makers allow it.
