Socket FM2 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
Socket FM2 is the AMD socketed platform for Trinity and Richland desktop APUs. It carries 904 contacts in a PGA-ZIF socket on a 31 by 31 grid with a central void. AMD launched the socket in September 2012 with Trinity, followed by Richland in June 2013. Boards use A85X and related chipsets for SATA and USB while graphics and memory ride on the APU.

Overview
The platform exists for cheap socketed desktops with real graphics on die. Two Piledriver cores cover office work at 65 W with turbo past 4 GHz on top SKUs. Memory stays dual channel DDR3-1866 and 2133. PCIe 2.0 from the APU feeds one graphics slot. Coolers swap freely with AM2, AM3 and FM2+ mounts on the shared 48 by 96 mm rectangle.
Because the product is socketed, chips move between FM2 boards where the BIOS lists them, and most FM2+ boards also boot Trinity and Richland. Boxed packs include a stock cooler for the 65 W envelope. Successor FM2+ replaced the platform in 2014 with Steamroller Kaveri parts that never fit here.
Processor generations
Who Socket FM2 serves
Socket FM2 fits home office desktops, school labs and HTPC builders who want cheap socketed AMD boxes with usable graphics. The 65 W ceiling keeps cases small and quiet. A4 parts cover terminals while A6 parts add clocks for family use. All five APUs in this batch share DDR3 boards and stock cooling.
Within the socket the ladder runs from dual core A4 parts through faster A4 PRO and B models to the unlocked A6-6420K at 4.0 GHz to 4.2 GHz. Graphics climb from HD 7480D through HD 8370D to HD 8470D. Compare CPU turbo first, since all stay near 65 W.
Memory and PCIe
Memory support is DDR3-1333 on the A4-4020 through DDR3-1866 on A6 parts, always over two 64 bit channels. Two matched DIMMs feed the graphics best. Eight gigabytes with an SSD covers office duty.
PCIe 2.0 from the APU wires one graphics slot for mainstream cards of the era. A Radeon card from the same generation pairs without bottlenecks at 1080p. SATA SSDs make the biggest difference on these 65 W chips.

Frequently asked questions
Which processors fit Socket FM2?
Trinity and Richland A-series APUs plus Athlon X2 and X4 parts based on them. Kaveri Steamroller parts need Socket FM2+ despite the similar name.
Do Richland APUs work in FM2+ boards?
Yes, most FM2+ boards boot Trinity and Richland after a BIOS check. The reverse never works: Kaveri parts do not fit FM2 sockets.
What memory does Socket FM2 use?
DDR3-1866 and 2133 over two 64 bit channels. Richland A8 and A10 parts reach 2133, while A4 and A6 parts top out at 1866 or lower. Two matched DIMMs feed graphics best.
How many PCIe lanes does Socket FM2 provide?
PCIe 2.0 from the APU for one graphics slot, with SATA and USB from the board chipset. A mainstream card of the era matches the 65 W APUs without waste.
