BGA 1964 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
BGA 1964 is Intels ball grid array package for Raptor Lake-HX enthusiast laptop processors from January 2024. It is a soldered two-chip module with processor die plus on-package PCH that has carried 10-core i5 through 24-core i9 HX SKUs at 55 W. Against the smaller BGA 1744 package used for 15 W U-series thin laptops, BGA 1964 is the larger gaming option with discrete GPU lanes and 157 W turbo headroom.

Overview
Boards pair BGA 1964 with DDR5-5600 or DDR4-3200 SODIMM in two channels up to 192 GB. The ceiling stayed at 5600 MT per s across the HX Refresh, so memory choice is fixed per board design. The CPU provides PCIe 5.0 x16 for discrete graphics plus PCIe 4.0 x4 for NVMe, with 16 Gen4 and 12 Gen3 lanes from the PCH for Thunderbolt, wireless and extra storage.
Like every mobile BGA package, BGA 1964 trades replacement for integration at gaming power. The chip cannot be swapped, cooling is part of the laptop body across a 45 to 157 W range, and buyers choose core count with the discrete GPU as one system. When a design needs thin-and-light efficiency instead of HX throughput, the smaller BGA 1744 package carries the U-series silicon instead.
Processor generations
| Codename | Marketing name | Years | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alder Lake-HX | 12th Gen Core HX | 2022 | Enthusiast gaming laptop silicon with 8 to 16 cores and 157 W turbo, launched in May 2022 as desktop-derived modules with on-package PCH. |
| Raptor Lake-HX | 14th Gen Core HX | 2024 | Enthusiast gaming laptop silicon with up to 24 cores and 157 W turbo, launched in January 2024 as Raptor Lake Refresh two-chip modules with on-package PCH. |
A soldered gaming package
BGA 1964 follows the same rule as every BGA package on this site: the processor solders once at the factory and stays with the board for life. There are no pins to bend and no lever to lift, but there is also no upgrade path. A gaming laptop buyer lives with the chosen SKU, and the memory choice on soldered boards is permanent. Intel lists the January 2024 HX Refresh with the same BGA 1964 footprint as prior HX, which confirms the package carried the refresh without a board change.
The package choice shapes the laptop. BGA 1964 needs a gaming body with dual fans and heat pipes for 55 W sustained loads and 157 W peaks. The two-chip module with PCH adds board area over single-chip U packages. Compatibility across HX SKUs still depends on firmware and power delivery, so a board that ships with an i5 HX may need vendor validation before running an i9 HX at full turbo.
Memory, expansion and cooling
Memory on BGA 1964 is a board decision with two valid answers. Performance gaming laptops use DDR5-5600 SODIMM for bandwidth to feed 14-core to 24-core silicon, while value HX designs use DDR4-3200 to reuse stocks. Capacity is fixed at manufacture on soldered boards, so 16 GB versus 32 GB joins the SKU as a lasting choice. Display and wireless attach through the board, with MUX switches and Wi-Fi 7 cards on premium models.
Expansion comes from CPU PCIe 5.0 x16 for the discrete GPU plus CPU PCIe 4.0 x4 for the primary NVMe drive. The PCH adds Gen4 and Gen3 lanes for second SSDs, Thunderbolt 4 controllers and card readers. Boards that need more than the module offers cannot add a desktop chipset, so I/O stays at the HX baseline.
Cooling has no retail answer on BGA 1964. The same package spans 45 W down-configured designs to 157 W peaks, and the heatsink assembly is drawn for that laptop. Thermal paste quality and fan curves follow the maker specification rather than a cooler maker socket list. Sustained gaming loads settle at the power the body rejects, so reviews of the exact model predict real behavior.
Where BGA 1964 designs are used
BGA 1964 covers bulky gaming notebooks and portable workstations from early 2024. The Refresh scales from 10-core i5 HX through 24-core i9 HX in one package, with unlocked multipliers on HX for tuning where the vendor allows. Production laptops come from gaming makers with 16-inch to 18-inch bodies and discrete GPUs from mid-range to flagship.
Desktop builders meet similar Raptor Lake silicon on LGA 1700 instead, where socketed boards with DDR5 and DDR4 take 65 W desktop parts. BGA 1964 stays the mobile home of HX with PCH integration. Designs that outgrow laptop power move to desktop LGA towers. The LGA, PGA and BGA: CPU package types explained guide covers the soldered tradeoff behind gaming laptop designs.

Frequently asked questions
Can a BGA 1964 processor be replaced or upgraded?
No. The processor solders to the gaming laptop board. Upgrading means replacing the whole laptop, so choose core count and GPU pairing at order time.
Does BGA 1964 use DDR4 or DDR5?
DDR5-5600 or DDR4-3200 in two channels up to 192 GB, decided per board. Soldered designs fix size, while SODIMM designs allow swaps. Shared graphics use part of the pool.
What is the difference between BGA 1964 and BGA 1744?
BGA 1964 at 55 W serves gaming laptops with up to 24 cores and discrete GPUs. BGA 1744 at 15 W serves thin laptops with integrated graphics only. The two packages target different power bands.
Does BGA 1964 support PCIe Gen5?
PCIe 5.0 x16 for discrete graphics plus PCIe 4.0 x4 for NVMe from the CPU, with more Gen4 and Gen3 lanes from the on-package PCH. Notebook designs add Thunderbolt 4 and Wi-Fi 7 through the board.
