BGA 1380 socket: CPUs, chipsets and cooler fit
BGA 1380 is the Intel soldered package for Bay Trail-T Atom tablet SoCs. It carries 1,380 contacts in a 17 by 17 mm footprint and solders directly to the board. Intel shipped the Z3700 series in September 2013 at 2 W scenario design power, with quad Silvermont cores and HD Graphics for the Z3700 series.

Overview
The package combines four Silvermont CPU cores with Gen7 graphics, a dual channel LPDDR3 controller, and tablet I/O on one die. That integration suits fanless tablets and 2 in 1 devices, where one soldered chip covers compute, graphics, memory control and display output. Base clocks sit near 1.3 GHz with burst to 1.8 GHz and above on listed SKUs.
BGA 1380 was superseded by Cherry Trail on smaller packages. Because the chip and memory both solder down, buying decisions should weigh storage and display alongside the processor. A board replacement is the only CPU upgrade path, which rarely makes sense against a newer tablet.
Processor generations

|---|---|---|---|
| Bay Trail-T | Atom Z3700 series tablets | 2013 to 2014 | Silvermont quad core tablet SoCs with HD Graphics for Z3700, launched in September 2013 on BGA 1380 at 2 W SDP, including the Z3740 and Z3770. |
Soldered package
BGA 1380 processors solder with 1,380 balls and cannot be removed or replaced. There is no retention lever, no pin grid and no aftermarket mounting choice. Thermal design uses the tablet chassis and heat spreader sized for the 2 W scenario envelope, with burst behavior tuned per device.
Because the chip cannot be swapped, the practical check before buying a used Bay Trail-T tablet is the condition of the whole device. Battery health, display wear, storage size and OS support matter more than the exact Z3700 model. A board replacement is the only CPU upgrade path, and it usually costs more than the tablet is worth.
Memory and I/O
BGA 1380 designs use LPDDR3-1066 in two 64 bit channels up to 4 GB, soldered next to the SoC. The dual channel layout feeds the HD Graphics block that shares system RAM, which helps video playback and light games. Capacity and speed lock at purchase, so confirm the 2 GB versus 4 GB build before buying.
PCIe connectivity is PCIe 2.0 from the SoC with a layout that varies by board. Tablets devote lanes to storage, wireless and sensors rather than graphics slots. Display outputs, USB, cameras and touch controllers all follow the device wiring, so the maker spec sheet is the final word on ports.
Platform lifecycle
BGA 1380 covers Bay Trail-T from September 2013 through 2014. Intel moved tablets to Cherry Trail with newer graphics and smaller packages. New compatible boards are therefore used or old stock, not current retail.
For a working Bay Trail-T tablet the practical path is maintenance: free storage, a fresh battery where service allows, and a light OS build. A platform move means a new tablet with a current SoC, LPDDR4 or newer memory and current wireless. The How to find your CPU socket type guide explains how to confirm the package before ordering parts.

Frequently asked questions
Can a BGA 1380 processor be replaced or upgraded?
No. The chip solders with 1,380 balls. A faster tablet means a new board or a new device. Memory is also soldered in these designs.
What memory does BGA 1380 use?
LPDDR3-1066 in two 64 bit channels up to 4 GB. The memory is soldered, so capacity locks at purchase. Two channels feed the HD Graphics block best.
What is the difference between BGA 1380 and BGA 1170?
Bay Trail-T covers Atom Z3740, Z3770 and related tablet SoCs with quad Silvermont cores and HD Graphics for Z3700. Bay Trail-M on BGA 1170 covers larger value notebooks with DDR3L SODIMMs. The packages never interchange.
What does burst frequency mean on Bay Trail-T?
Burst raises short clocks above the base, for example 1.33 GHz base to 1.86 GHz burst on the Z3740. It is not Turbo Boost. Sustained speed follows the 2 W SDP envelope and the tablet thermal design.
