What the Xeon W3670 is

The Intel Xeon W3670 is a six core Gulftown workstation processor that Intel launched in August 2010 at 3.2 GHz with Turbo Boost to 3.466 GHz. Hyper-Threading gives twelve threads from six Westmere cores, backed by 256 KB of L2 per core and 12 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 130 W on a 32 nm process with 1,170 million transistors.

The W3670 is the locked workstation twin near the top of the single socket stack at $885 launch price. Against the W3680 it trails on clocks with a locked multiplier. ECC RDIMMs guard workstation data on X58 boards with workstation firmware. The multiplier is locked, unlike the W3680.

Memory is DDR3 triple channel with ECC through the board design.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon W3670 fits LGA 1366 with 1366 lands. X58 workstation boards boot Gulftown Xeons directly with a 2010 BIOS. Check ECC RDIMM populations per vendor.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Core i7-990X page shows the Extreme desktop cousin.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3 triple channel with ECC up to large counts on workstation boards.

PCIe 2.0 comes from the X58 chipset with dual x16 slots.

Cooling needs a tower rated for 130 W on the 80 × 80 mm pattern.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1366 the upgrade is the W3680 with an unlocked multiplier on the same board. Beyond LGA 1366 a move to Sandy Bridge E needs a new board.
