What the Xeon L3403 is

The Intel Xeon L3403 is a dual core Clarkdale server processor from October 2010. It runs two Westmere cores at 2.0 GHz with no turbo and no Hyper-Threading, so 2 cores give 2 threads. The pair shares 4 MB of L3 cache on a 32 nm CPU die with a 45 nm graphics die. Power is rated at 30 W on LGA 1156.

The L prefix marks low voltage for efficient single socket servers that idle most of the day. Against the L3406 at 2.266 GHz it trails on clocks and threads at the same 30 W. ECC UDIMMs work where the board wires them for server integrity.

Memory is DDR3-1066 in two channels through the on package controller.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon L3403 fits LGA 1156 with 1156 lands. Server boards with 3400 series firmware boot Clarkdale Xeons directly. Check the vendor CPU list because desktop P55 boards rarely list L SKUs.

The socket table covers Clarkdale natively. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the Intel Pentium G6950 page shows the desktop twin.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1066 ECC UDIMMs in two channels where boards wire them.

PCIe 2.0 x16 comes from the package for RAID and network cards.

Cooling is a 1U or tower server heatsink rated for 30 W.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1156 the server upgrade is the L3406 with threads at the same power, or an X3400 quad on the same board. Beyond LGA 1156 a move to Sandy Bridge Xeon E3 needs a new board.

Frequently asked questions
