What the Xeon E7540 is

The Intel Xeon E7540 is a six core Nehalem-EX server processor that Intel launched on March 30, 2010 at 2000 MHz with Turbo Boost to 2.266 GHz. Hyper-Threading gives twelve threads from six Beckton cores, backed by 256 KB of L2 per core and 18 MB of shared L3 cache. Power is rated at 105 W on a 45 nm process with 2,300 million transistors on a 684 mm² die.

The E7540 scales to eight sockets over four QPI links at 6.4 GT/s for large virtualization hosts. DDR3-1333 ECC in four channels gives 42.7 GB/s per socket. Against the E6540 it matches clocks and cache as the volume six core at $1980 MSRP.

There is no graphics. I/O comes from the 7500 chipset with PCIe Gen 2.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon E7540 fits LGA 1567 with 1567 lands. Boxboro 7500 boards boot it natively with the SLBRG sSpec. Up to eight sockets scale one node with matched steppings.

The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR3-1333 ECC in four channels per socket with buffered DIMMs.

Four QPI links at 6.4 GT/s scale to eight sockets, with PCIe Gen 2 from the chipset.

Cooling uses server heatsinks rated for 105 W.

Upgrade paths

On LGA 1567 the upgrade is an eight core such as the X7550 on the same board. Beyond LGA 1567 a move to Sandy Bridge E7 needs a new platform.
