What the Xeon E5-2470 is

Intel Xeon E5-2470 is an eight core Sandy Bridge-EN server processor that Intel released in May 2012 as the top of the EN launch. It runs at 2.3 GHz base with turbo to 3.1 GHz, with 20 MB cache and Hyper-Threading for 16 threads. Power is rated at 95 W on a 32 nm process. High base plus large cache made it the choice for dual socket application servers that could not use the larger LGA 2011 platform.

No integrated graphics are present. Memory spans DDR3-800 to 1600 over three channels with ECC, and the chip gives 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes plus one 8.0 GT/s QPI link. Sixteen fast threads cover databases, virtualization and build farms.

Boards pair it with registered DIMMs and fast storage in 1U and 2U chassis. All core work near 2.3 GHz keeps throughput high under load. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows how to confirm the socket before ordering.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Xeon E5-2470 fits LGA 1356 in FCLGA1356 form. C600 series Socket B2 boards on the Romley-EN platform carry it, with C602 the reference. The vendor list must show the exact E5-2470 string.

At 95 W full size server heatsinks apply. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers server rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR3 at 800, 1066, 1333 or 1600 MT/s, three channels, with ECC and registered DIMMs. Two DIMMs per channel at 1600 MT/s give the best bandwidth for sixteen threads.

PCI Express is 24 lanes of PCIe 3.0 per socket. The 8.0 GT/s QPI link joins socket pairs. NUMA aware placement guides I/O and memory assignment.

Cooling is vendor qualified for 95 W with directed airflow. No retail mount exists.

Upgrade paths

Within LGA 1356 the Xeon E5-2470 already tops the Sandy Bridge-EN range, so the remaining same socket path is Ivy Bridge-EN eight core parts where vendor lists allow. Memory and storage carry over. A slower eight core step below is Intel Xeon E5-2450.

A platform move means a DDR4 server generation. Keep the node for heavy threaded duty where sixteen fast Sandy threads still deliver.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Intel Xeon E5-2470 use?

It uses LGA 1356. C600 series Socket B2 boards carry it.
