Recommended GPU pairing

Recommended tierHigh-end 1440p
Example GPUsGeForce RTX 4070, Radeon RX 7800 XT
Target resolution1440p high settings

Sixteen cores with boost to 5.2 GHz, 20 PCIe lanes with PCIe 5.0 graphics and DDR5 suit high-end 1440p cards from early 2023. A faster card still works and the balance shifts with game, settings and resolution.

This is a rough match for a new build at the stated resolution, not a limit. A faster card still works and helps at higher resolutions or in games that load the GPU more than the CPU. A slower card is fine for lighter games and office use. The exact balance shifts with the game, the settings and the resolution, so no percentage is given.

What the Core i7-13700 is

The Core i7-13700 is a sixteen core, twenty-four thread processor that Intel released in January 2023 with the locked 65 W 13th Gen range. It has 8 Performance-cores with two threads each and 8 Efficient-cores with one each. Performance-cores run 2.1 GHz base to 5.1 GHz turbo, reaching 5.2 GHz with Turbo Boost Max 3.0, while Efficient-cores run 1.5 GHz to 4.1 GHz. Cache is 30 MB of shared L3 with 24 MB of total L2.

Lower base clocks separate it from the K: 2.1 GHz against 3.4 GHz on the P-cores and 1.5 GHz against 2.5 GHz on the E-cores, with peak boost close behind. Intel rates the base power at 65 W with maximum turbo power at 219 W. The process is Intel 7.

Intel UHD Graphics 770 cover display output, and the multiplier is locked. The launch price was $384 (Intel RCP). Retail boxes include an Intel Laminar RM1 cooler.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 13700 fits the LGA 1700 socket. It arrived with the rest of the 65 W 13th Gen range at CES in January 2023, so 700 series boards (Z790, H770, B760) accept it from the start and most 600 series boards (Z690, H670, B660, H610, Q670, W680) needed only a recent BIOS.

Since the multiplier is locked, B760 and B660 boards are the natural home. Z-series boards add little except faster memory profiles and more ports. Office and workstation builds on Q670 and W680 boards use the same chip with ECC memory where the board supports it.

Check the maker's CPU support list for the minimum BIOS on early 600 series stock. USB BIOS flashback boards update without a supported processor fitted.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR5 up to 5600 MT/s or DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s, with the board deciding the type. Two channels carry up to 192 GB. DDR4 boards reuse older kits, while DDR5 boards take new modules at higher official speeds.

The CPU supplies 20 PCIe lanes: x16 at PCIe 5.0 for graphics, splittable into two x8, plus x4 at PCIe 4.0 for storage. Integrated graphics drive up to four displays for office use without a card.

The boxed Laminar RM1 cooler handles stock settings in a ventilated case. Sustained all-core loads run quieter under a larger tower cooler on the 78 mm LGA 1700 pattern, described in the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide.

Stability and microcode updates

Intel confirmed in 2024 that 13th and 14th Gen desktop processors could suffer Vmin shift instability from elevated voltage requests in microcode and BIOS code. It released microcode updates including 0x12B, delivered only through motherboard BIOS updates, with its Intel Default Settings profile recommended.

Locked 65 W chips request less current than unlocked flagships, but the update path is the same. Install the current BIOS before commissioning the machine, and treat instability that survives the update as a warranty issue.

Upgrade paths

Against the Intel Core i7-13700K, the 13700 trades base clock and overclocking for a 65 W rating, a boxed cooler and a lower platform cost. Against the Intel Core i5-12400F, it doubles Efficient-core count and cache for threaded work on the same socket.

Later LGA 1851 platforms need a new board and DDR5. The 13700 fits an office PC, a family PC with light creation work, or a quiet build that keeps integrated graphics.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Intel Core i7-13700 use?

It uses LGA 1700, written FCLGA1700 in Intel's documents.

What is the difference between the 13700 and the 13700K?

The K has higher base clocks and an unlocked multiplier at 125 W. The 13700 keeps close peak boost at 65 W with a boxed cooler included.

Does the 13700 run in a B660 motherboard?

Yes. B660 and H610 boards accept it after a BIOS update carrying 13th Gen support, and B760 boards accept it from the start.

Does the 13700 work with DDR4 memory?

Yes, on a DDR4 board up to DDR4-3200. A DDR5 board needs DDR5 modules instead, up to DDR5-5600.

Does the 13700 come with a cooler?

Yes. Retail boxes include the Intel Laminar RM1 cooler, which covers stock operation.
