What the Core i7-10610U is

The Core i7-10610U is a four core, eight thread Comet Lake-U processor for thin business laptops. It arrived in May 2020 with a 1.8 GHz base and up to 4.9 GHz boost at 15 W. vPro support separates it from consumer U parts for fleet management.

Eight megabytes of Smart Cache cover office multitasking, video calls and light photo work. The low base stretches battery life, while boost lifts single thread bursts for document loads. Configurable TDP from 10 to 25 W lets makers tune the same chip for fanless leaning bodies or faster thin clamshells.

UHD Graphics with up to 1.15 GHz burst drive triple displays for desk docking. There is no discrete GPU in most 10610U designs, so 3D stays light. Four cores with eight threads remain the thin office standard for Windows business fleets.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 10610U solders to BGA 1528 at 46 by 24 mm. There is no socket and no CPU swap. Laptop boards define memory type, ports and docking for the life of the machine.

Business lines pair the chip with vPro capable firmware for remote management. Memory is SODIMM slots on serviceable bodies or soldered LPDDR on thinner ones. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows where maker specs list the package.

BGA 1440 performance boards and LGA 1200 desktops cannot host the chip. The low power ball map and firmware are unique to BGA 1528.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2666 SODIMMs plus LPDDR3-2133 and LPDDR4-2933 soldered options cover the family, with up to 64 GB in two channels. Office builds ship 8 or 16 GB with room to grow where slots exist. Dual channel mode helps graphics and calls.

Sixteen PCIe 3.0 lanes wire as x4 and x2 combinations for NVMe SSDs and board devices. A 512 GB NVMe SSD is the typical 10610U pairing. Thunderbolt 3 on premium bodies adds docks and external displays.

Cooling is a single heat pipe and fan for 15 W, silent at idle. The 10 W down mode suits sealed bodies. Service is fan cleaning per maker guide, never a cooler swap.

Upgrade paths

Soldered BGA leaves no CPU path. Memory to 16 or 32 GB and a larger NVMe SSD are the business upgrades. Battery service restores travel time.

A laptop change to the 6-core Intel Core i7-10810U adds threads in a similar thin body. A move to BGA 1744 hybrid mobile brings newer cores and media for current fleets.
