Recommended GPU pairing

Recommended tierMid-range 1080p
Example GPUsGeForce RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6600
Target resolution1080p high settings

Six Performance-cores with boost to 4.4 GHz, 20 PCIe lanes and DDR5 line up with mid-range 1080p cards from early 2022. A faster card still works and the balance shifts with game, settings and resolution.

This is a rough match for a new build at the stated resolution, not a limit. A faster card still works and helps at higher resolutions or in games that load the GPU more than the CPU. A slower card is fine for lighter games and office use. The exact balance shifts with the game, the settings and the resolution, so no percentage is given.

What the Core i5-12400 is

The Core i5-12400 is a six core, twelve thread processor that Intel released in January 2022 with the locked 65 W Alder Lake range. It has 6 Performance-cores with two threads each and no Efficient-cores. The cores run 2.5 GHz base to 4.4 GHz turbo. Cache is 18 MB of shared L3 with 7.5 MB of total L2.

Without Efficient-cores the chip behaves like a traditional six-core: every thread runs on a fast Golden Cove core, which keeps scheduling simple on any operating system. Intel rates the base power at 65 W with maximum turbo power at 117 W. The process is Intel 7.

Intel UHD Graphics 730 handle display output, with 24 execution units at up to 1.45 GHz. The multiplier is locked. The launch price was $192 (Intel RCP). Retail boxes include an Intel Laminar RM1 cooler.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 12400 fits the LGA 1700 socket. It launched with the 600 series chipsets (Z690, H670, B660, H610), which accept it from the start. Later 700 series boards accept it as part of socket-wide compatibility.

B660 and H610 boards are the expected pairing. Z-series boards add little except ports and memory profiles, since the multiplier stays locked. The modest 117 W ceiling runs on budget board power designs.

Check the maker's CPU support list for the minimum BIOS on early production boards. USB BIOS flashback boards update without a supported processor fitted.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

The memory controller supports DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s or DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s, with the board deciding the type. Two channels carry up to 128 GB. DDR4 boards were the value pick at launch, reusing older kits with a chip that barely stresses memory bandwidth.

The CPU supplies 20 lanes: x16 for graphics plus x4 for storage. Integrated graphics drive office displays without a card.

The boxed Laminar RM1 cooler is adequate for stock operation with airflow. A tower cooler lowers noise under sustained loads. Mounting uses the 78 mm LGA 1700 pattern from the CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide.

A simple core layout and the DDR4 or DDR5 choice

With no Efficient-cores, Thread Director has little to schedule and the chip runs at its best on any recent Windows or Linux release. That made the 12400 a favorite for builders who wanted Alder Lake without caring about Windows 11.

Memory choice set the build cost rather than performance: DDR4 boards kept older kits in service, while DDR5 boards needed new modules. Both observe the official ceilings above without overclocking.

Upgrade paths

Against the Intel Core i5-12400F, the 12400 adds UHD 730 graphics for display output and troubleshooting at a small premium. Against the Intel Core i5-12600K, it gives up Efficient-cores, cache and overclocking for lower power and price.

Later LGA 1851 platforms need a new board and DDR5. The 12400 fits an office PC, a family PC, or a budget gaming tower with a mid-range card.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Intel Core i5-12400 use?

It uses LGA 1700, written FCLGA1700 in Intel's documents.

What is the difference between the 12400 and the 12400F?

The F has no integrated graphics and needs a separate card. The plain 12400 adds UHD 730 output for a small premium.

Does the 12400 run in a B660 motherboard?

Yes. B660 and H610 boards accept it from the start, and B760 boards accept it as part of socket-wide compatibility.

Does the 12400 work with DDR4 memory?

Yes, on a DDR4 board up to DDR4-3200. A DDR5 board needs DDR5 modules instead, up to DDR5-4800.

Does the 12400 come with a cooler?

Yes. Retail boxes include the Intel Laminar RM1 cooler, which covers stock operation.
