Motherboard compatibility

Intel Celeron 1020E needs a motherboard with a BGA 1023 socket. Chipset by chipset data for this codename is not recorded yet. See the BGA 1023 chipset list and the board maker's CPU support list.

What the Celeron 1020E is

Intel Celeron 1020E is a dual core Ivy Bridge embedded part that Intel released in January 2013 for carriers and boxes with long lifecycles. It uses the Ivy Bridge core design on a 22 nm process, running at 2.2 GHz with no turbo. The cache is 2 MB Intel Smart Cache (L3). Power is 35 W. Graphics come from Intel HD Graphics (650 MHz to 1000 MHz).

The cores have no Hyper-Threading, so threads equal cores at 2. The GT1 graphics block covers monitors and video without a separate card. The package integrates the memory controller on die with ECC support on selected designs.

At 35 W the Celeron 1020E belongs to the embedded BGA1023 group. The fixed 2.2 GHz clock suits control, signage and kiosk loads with passive or small active cooling. Note that this SKU also ships in FCPGA988 form for Socket G2 with no ECC; check the board and sSpec before ordering parts. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows how to confirm the package before ordering parts.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Celeron 1020E solders to BGA 1023 with 1,023 balls in a 31 by 24 mm footprint and cannot be moved to another board. Embedded carriers qualify each model with a specific board and BIOS for a locked lifecycle, so even another UE or E part is not a drop in swap.

Power and firmware decide service results. The 35 W envelope sizes the heatsink, and the board BIOS must list the exact Celeron 1020E string. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide notes that soldered parts have no desktop mount pattern. Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works covers Intel pairing basics.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is ddr3 and ddr3l-1333 and 1600, two channels, up to 16 gb, ecc. ECC on UE and E designs catches single bit errors in long running tasks where the board enables it. Capacity limits follow the board or carrier design.

PCI Express lanes come from the CPU with a layout that varies by board design. Most boards in this class keep the graphics path internal and devote lanes to SATA storage and wireless. There is no graphics card slot to consider.

Cooling uses the system heatsink sized for 35 W. Repaste helps only where the design permits service.

Upgrade paths

There is no CPU upgrade path on soldered BGA 1023. The Celeron 1020E cannot be removed, so a faster part means a new board or a new carrier. The FCPGA988 PGA twin for Socket G2 is socketed, but the two packages never interchange.Within the family a board swap is the only path, and it rarely pays against a newer system.

A platform move means a new embedded box. Current Intel low power lives on newer BGA packages with DDR3L or DDR4 and current OS support, which no BGA 1023 board can reach. Recycle the old unit through a proper e waste path once data is wiped.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the Intel Celeron 1020E use?

Both. It ships soldered on BGA 1023 and socketed in FCPGA988 form for Socket G2. Check the sSpec: SR0VR is BGA, SR10D is PGA.

Can the 1020E be upgraded?

The BGA variant cannot be removed. The PGA variant can be replaced where the laptop allows access and the BIOS lists it.

What memory does the 1020E use?

DDR3 and DDR3L-1333 and 1600, two channels, up to 16 GB, ECC. ECC works on the BGA variant where the carrier enables it.

Does the 1020E have turbo?

No. It runs at a fixed 2.2 GHz clock.
