What the Atom Z560 is
The Intel Atom Z560 is a single core Silverthorne handheld processor on BGA 441. It runs one Bonnell core with Hyper-Threading for two threads at 2.133 GHz with no turbo, backed by 512 KB of L2 cache. Power is rated at 2 W on a 45 nm process with 47 million transistors on a 26 mm² die. TechPowerUp lists June 1, 2010 as the launch date with the SLH63 sSpec.
At 2.133 GHz it is the fastest Silverthorne handheld part, aimed at mobile internet devices on the Menlow platform with the Poulsbo companion. In-order execution keeps power low but trails Core class cores per clock. Hardware virtualization is available, which helps virtual machine use. The multiplier is locked at 16x on a 133 MHz base clock.
There is no graphics on the CPU die. Display and memory run through the Poulsbo System Controller Hub companion.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The Atom Z560 is soldered to the board in BGA 441 and cannot be replaced. Handheld repair means board replacement.
The Poulsbo companion pairs over the 533 MHz front side bus, so firmware must list the SLH63 sSpec. The CPU cooler compatibility by socket guide covers soldered rules.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory is DDR2 single channel through the Poulsbo companion, fixed per design.
No PCIe comes from the CPU. Expansion and GMA500 class display run through Poulsbo.
Cooling is passive by design. The 2 W envelope needs only a spreader.
Upgrade paths
There is no CPU upgrade path on BGA 441 because the chip is soldered. Lincroft on BGA 518 later moved graphics and memory on die for new handheld designs.
Frequently asked questions
