What the POWER9 02CY417 is

The IBM POWER9 02CY417 is a 16-core server processor with a 2.3 GHz base and up to 3.8 GHz turbo frequency. It runs 16 Sforza cores with 4-way threading, so 16 cores give 64 threads. Cache is 512 KB of L2 per core duplex with 32 KB of L1 per core plus 10 MB of L3 per core duplex on a 14 nm SOI process with 8 billion transistors. Power is rated at 130 W in a 50 mm by 50 mm FCLGA-2601 package.

SMT4 threading with massive per-core caches gives the 02CY417 strong throughput for Linux scale-out workloads, which is why the 16-core string suits dual-socket OpenPOWER servers. IBM launched Sforza parts in November 2017. The chip supports Power ISA v3.0 with VSX-3 instructions and trusted execution.

Mid Sforza clocks with a 130 W envelope suit dual-socket servers with DDR4 memory. The 2-way SMP links cover dual topologies. That is why the 02CY417 shipped in Talos II dual-socket systems.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The 02CY417 fits LGA 2601 dual servers with Sforza support. It needs a 2601-land board with OpenPOWER firmware and a device tree that lists the part. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Dual OpenPOWER servers such as the Talos II are the natural match. Boards listing Sforza 16-core parts accept one or two chips with 130 W heatsinks each.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR4 with ECC through the eight on-chip ports, up to 2 TB per socket with direct attach. PCIe Gen4 with 48 lanes per socket feeds storage and accelerators. Cooling uses server heatsinks on the LGA frame rated for 130 W.

Upgrade paths

On the same socket, a POWER9 02CY089 such as IBM POWER9 02CY089 trades 8 cores for higher 3.5 GHz clocks at 160 W when single-thread pace matters. A 22-core Sforza on the same list adds cores at higher power.

A move to POWER10 needs a new platform. The LGA 2601 page lists the Sforza range for planning.

Frequently asked questions
