What the Sempron 140 is
The AMD Sempron 140 is a single core Sargas desktop processor that AMD launched on July 22, 2009 at 2.7 GHz. It runs one K10 core at 2.7 GHz with no turbo, so 1 core gives 1 thread. Cache is 1 MB of L2 on a 45 nm process with 234 million transistors and the SDX140HBK13GQ part. Power is rated at 45 W on Socket AM3.
The Sempron 140 was the launch Sargas single core with hardware virtualization for home servers. Against the Sempron 130 at 2.6 GHz it adds 100 MHz. A ServeTheHome review ran it in a single fan enclosure at 31 W idle for a Windows Home Server box.
There is no graphics on the die. Board video comes from 7 and 8 series chipsets where fitted.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The Sempron 140 fits Socket AM3 with 938 pins. All 7 series and 8 series boards boot Sargas directly.
AM3 chips also fit AM3+ boards. It also boots on AM2+ DDR2 boards after a BIOS update. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory is DDR2 up to PC2-8500 and DDR3 up to PC3-10600 in two channels.
HyperTransport links the CPU to the chipset at 2 GHz. PCIe Gen 2 slots hang off the chipset.
Cooling is the stock 45 W heatsink on the 48 × 96 mm mount.
Upgrade paths
On Socket AM3 the upgrade is an Athlon II X2 dual core such as the 240 on the same board. Beyond AM3 a move to AM3+ needs a new board.
