What the Athlon X2 QL-62 is

The AMD Athlon X2 QL-62 is an efficient 2.0 GHz mobile dual core from September 1, 2008. It runs two Griffin cores at 2.0 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 512 KB of L2 per core, 1 MB total, on a 65 nm process. Power is rated at 25 W on Socket S1.

The QL-62 is the low-power Athlon X2 of the Griffin line, part AMQL62DAM22GG with a locked 10x multiplier. It exists because notebook makers wanted dual-core Griffin speed in thinner chassis that could not cool 35 W parts. Against the 1.9 GHz QL-60 it is both faster and cooler.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The QL-62 fits S1g2 Puma notebooks with DDR2 SO-DIMM slots and a BIOS that lists Griffin Athlon parts. It does not fit S1g1 boards despite the shared 638 pins. Display comes from the notebook board graphics. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory is DDR2-800 SO-DIMMs in two channels through the on-die controller, with no ECC support.

A 1800 MHz HyperTransport link ties the CPU to the mobile chipset. PCIe slots and board graphics hang off the chipset.

Cooling is the notebook vendor heat pipe assembly for the exact chassis, with PowerNow! trimming clocks and voltage on battery.

Upgrade paths

On Socket S1 the QL-62 is the efficient Athlon ceiling, so the moves are the AMD Athlon X2 QL-60 at 1.9 GHz where 35 W fits, or the AMD Athlon X2 QL-67 at 2.2 GHz for top Athlon speed. The AMD Turion X2 RM-72 adds fuller power management at 35 W. A swap must stay within the thermal design the chassis was qualified for.
