What the Athlon X2 5200+ is

AMD Athlon X2 5200+ is a dual core Regor desktop processor that AMD released in August 2010 for budget towers. It runs at a fixed 2.3 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 512 KB of L2 per core with no L3. Power is 65 W on a 45 nm process with 410 million transistors.

The plus-series number follows the older Athlon X2 naming rather than the Athlon II sequence. Office suites run smoothly at 2.3 GHz. A boxed cooler ships with retail stock.

Memory runs as DDR2 and DDR3 at up to 1066 MT/s depending on the board. AM3 boards take DDR3 while AM2+ boards take DDR2 after a BIOS update. The chip launched at a $57 price for value builds.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The Athlon X2 5200+ fits Socket AM3 with 938 pins in µPGA form. Both 7 series and 8 series boards boot Regor directly. AM2+ boards accept it with DDR2 after a BIOS update.

Do not confuse it with the 2006 Windsor Athlon 64 X2 5200+ on Socket AM2. The names match while the silicon, socket and power differ completely.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

Memory support is DDR2 and DDR3 at up to 1066 MT/s, two channels. One memory type runs at a time per board. ECC is not supported.

HyperTransport links the CPU to the chipset at 2 GHz. PCIe slots hang off the board chipset rather than the processor.

Cooling is the boxed 65 W heatsink on the 48 by 96 mm mount. Retail stock includes the cooler.

Upgrade paths

On Socket AM3 the 5200+ can move to an Athlon II X2 for higher clocks on the same board. Memory and storage carry over. A same socket dual core reference with more cache is the Athlon II X2 220 class.

A platform move to DDR4 needs a new board and RAM. Keep the 5200+ tower for spare duty.

Frequently asked questions

What socket does the AMD Athlon X2 5200+ use?

It uses Socket AM3 in µPGA form.

How is the Athlon X2 5200+ different from the Athlon 64 X2 5200+?

This 2010 Regor part on AM3 at 65 W. The 2006 Windsor part on AM2 at 89 W is different silicon.

What memory does the Athlon X2 5200+ use?

DDR2 and DDR3-1066 in two channels, one type at a time.

Does the Athlon X2 5200+ include a cooler?

Yes, retail stock includes a boxed cooler.
