What the Athlon X2 5000+ is
The AMD Athlon X2 5000+ in its 45 nm form is a dual core K10 desktop processor from October 2009 for DDR2 towers. It runs two cores at 2.2 GHz with no turbo, so 2 cores give 2 threads. Cache is 1 MB of L2 in total with 512 KB per core and no L3 cache. Power is rated at 65 W on Socket AM2+.
This 45 nm 5000+ reuses a famous model number from the 90 nm Windsor and 65 nm Brisbane eras with new silicon for AM2+ DDR2 boards. Against the Kuma 7850 BE it trails on clocks and cache at lower power. Board tables list the 45 nm 5000+ at 2.2 GHz with DDR2-1066 support.
Memory is DDR2 in two channels. There is no L3 cache on this die.
Socket and motherboard compatibility
The Athlon X2 5000+ 45 nm fits Socket AM2+ with 940 pins. All 700 series DDR2 boards boot Regor class duals directly.
AM2+ chips never fit AM3. The Socket vs chipset: what decides whether a CPU works guide covers pairing rules, and the AMD Phenom II X3 715 BE page shows a triple on the same socket.
Memory, PCIe and cooling
Memory is DDR2-1066 in two channels.
HyperTransport links the CPU to the chipset. PCIe Gen 2 slots hang off the chipset.
Cooling is the stock 65 W heatsink on the 48 × 96 mm mount.
Upgrade paths
On Socket AM2+ the upgrade is a Kuma 7850 BE with L3 cache on the same board. Beyond AM2+ a move to AM3 needs a new board.
Frequently asked questions
What socket does the Athlon X2 5000+ use?
Socket AM2+, the 940-pin package on DDR2 boards. Older 90 nm and 65 nm 5000+ versions used Socket AM2 and AM2+.
How many cores does the Athlon X2 5000+ have?
Two cores and two threads at 2.2 GHz with 512 KB of L2 per core and no L3 cache on this 45 nm version.
What memory works with the Athlon X2 5000+?
DDR2-1066 in two channels.
