What the A9-9420 SoC is

The A9-9420 SoC is a two core, two thread mobile processor from Stoney Ridge. It launched in May 2016 with a 3.0 GHz base and up to 3.6 GHz boost at 15 W. At launch it was the fastest Stoney Ridge dual core, taking over from the A9-9410 on clocks.

One megabyte of shared L2 cache feeds office multitasking. The high 3.0 GHz base for a 15 W dual core keeps desktops responsive, while 3.6 GHz boost lifts single thread peaks. Fifteen watts suit 15 inch laptops with single fans.

Radeon R5 Graphics with 192 shaders up to 800 MHz drives laptop displays. Single channel DDR4-2133 feeds graphics bandwidth near 17 GB per sec. Hardware H.265 engines keep streaming smooth.

On 28 nm the 9420 solders to FT4 boards with BGA mounting. The 124.5 mm2 die carries 1200 million transistors. Locked multiplier removes tuning.

Socket and motherboard compatibility

The A9-9420 solders to Socket FT4 with no socket option. Laptop model fixes the chip for life. Boards set 15 W in firmware.

Entry laptops pair it with single channel DDR4-2133 up to 8 GB. Thin bodies boot from SSDs. The How to find your CPU socket type guide shows BGA identification.

The A9-9425 SoC on the same socket adds 100 MHz where pace helps. The A6-9230 SoC trims clocks where cost matters.

Memory, PCIe and cooling

DDR4-2133 in single channel up to 8 GB is the memory design. Bandwidth near 17 GB per sec suits office work. Dual channel operation is not offered on Stoney dual cores.

Eight PCIe 3.0 lanes wire SSDs and board devices. Speeds suit boot drives. Wi-Fi flows through board modules.

Fifteen watts cool with a small fan. Entry bodies favor battery over sustained pace.

Upgrade paths

No CPU upgrade exists on soldered FT4. SSD and memory where socketed are the only levers.
